Thousands crowd into downtown Seattle for annual Pride parade

As many as 300,000 people crowded into downtown Seattle for the annual Pride Celebration on Sunday. This year’s theme was “The Many Faces of Pride.”

The celebration started at Fourth Avenue and ended at Second Route and Denny Way near Seattle Center, lasting about 2.5 hours.

Seattle Center will host the 12th annual PrideFest until 8pm with dwell music and vendors.

Seattle celebrated its first Pride Week from June 24-30 in 1974. Three years later, Mayor Uhlman declared June 25 to July 1 Gay Pride Week in the urban area of Seattle. The city held its first Gay Event Week march that same year. Opponents picketed outside Urban area Hall and wrote angry letters to they mayor’s office.

Happy Pride Month! With the Seattle Lgbtq+ fest Parade right around the corner, we’re bringing Gary L. Atkins’s award-winning Gay Seattle: Stories of Exile and Belonging back into the spotlight.

In 1893, the Washington State legislature quietly began passing a set of laws that essentially made homosexuality, and eventually even the discussion of homosexuality, a crime. A century later Mike Lowry became the first governor of the state to address the annual lesbian and male lover pride rally in Seattle. Gay Seattle traces the evolution of Seattle’s homosexual community during those one hundred turbulent years, telling through a century of stories how gays and lesbians hold sought to reach a sense of belonging in Seattle.

These stories of exile and belonging outline on numerous first interviews as adequately as case studies of individuals and organizations that played important roles in the history of Seattle’s gay and lesbian community. Collectively, they are a powerful testament to the endurance and fortitude of this minority community, exposing the ways a previously hidden sexual minority “comes out” as a people and establishes a public presence in the face of challenge
