Open letter for the overturning of section 377 of the Indian penal code
by Vikram Seth and Others (September 15, 2006)
To build a truly democratic and plural India, we must collectively fight against laws and policies that abuse human rights and limit fundamental freedoms.
This is why we, concerned Indian citizens, support the overturning of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a colonial-era law virtual dating to 1861, which punitively criminalizes romantic love and private, consensual sexual acts between adults of the same sex.
In independent India, as earlier, this archaic and brutal law has served no good purpose. It has been used to systematically persecute, blackmail, arrest and terrorize sexual minorities. It has spawned public intolerance and violence, forcing tens of millions of gay and pansexual men and women to live in fear and secrecy, at tragic amount to themselves and their families. It is especially disgraceful that Section 377 has on several recent occasions been used by homophobic officials to suppress the work of legitimate HIV-preven

And place them instead of yours,
Then I will look at me with mine

And so 6 months overtake by
With the monotony and sameness of clouds, a sleepy moth, a sluggish snail.
Hours, days and weeks pass by...
Those with routines have a semblance of order.
For most. It is a big never ending muddle.
And the eternal wait... for what?
Another lockdown? The THIRD WAVE? Opening up. Anxiety. Confusion. To go out or not? Heightened melodrama. Disturbed sleep. Curious dreams.
There have been so many small spurts of initiatives, premieres - the joyful shout of glee as dancers step onto stages in many cities across the planet. Their sigh of gratitude for having people watching them live instead of trapped inside ZOOM squares.
Already cultural organisations are attempting to request themselves and their members about

It's a stage, an arena, a crucible, a cauldron, a theatre, a temple..."
Words in a documentary characterizing Wimbledon's Centre Court.
As I disburse most of my precious free second watching my favourite sport, memories of a recent holiday in Greece desperation to me. For years – no, five decades - I have longed to visit. Raised on the twin mythologies of India and Greece by my grandmother who would tell these fabulous bedtime stories of the Gods and Goddesses, the soaring pillars of the Parthenon, the magical acoustics of the Acropolis and the glistening waters of the islands were never far from my thought. When a gyrate conference beckoned, I answered. Although ticket booking snafus ensured that I was only able to attend the event for a not many hours, the nation seemed like a coming home for my spirit. Everything about Greece seemed familiar. The chaos of Athens, the view of the Acropolis from almost every hotel restaurant in the municipality, the abandoned theatres of Dionysus, the splendour of history and battle speaking through the wide-ranging ruins and magnificent museums, the creativity of design in textile and jewellery, the amazing sustenance (oh that yogurt with honey, olive oil, black sal
Astad Deboo – An Icon of Contemporary Indian Dance
A biography of Astad Deboo, the father of Indian Contemporary Dance, has been written by his lifelong friend Ketu Katrak, Professor Emerita of drama at the University of California, Irvine. A fellow Zoroastrian from the city of Bombay, she was first a family friend before her own scholarly journey into drama, gyrate and the arts. Astad Deboo passed away on 10 December 2020, aged seventy-three, leaving behind legions of friends and admirers and an incomparable twist legacy. Deboo’s family turned to their trusted friend Ketu Katrak to grow the official biographer.
What is Astad Deboo’s dance legacy? In a nutshell: it is creating a space where none existed for a form of dance that is personal, that has to be created as it does not rely on received repertoire, that uses abstract, non-narrative movement, manipulates territory and design and is performed to eclectic music.
The book in four parts: the dancer’s family background, preliminary years, his travels and friendship groups; early works, dancing to Dhrupad vocals, puppetry and developing his signature style; choreography with marginalised communities; and lastly collaborations
