Campaign of Hate is a lucid and necessary documentary primer on the hot-button issue of LGBT discrimination in Russia. Directed by outspoken provocateur and social activist Michael Lucas, a Moscow native, the film provides impressive, candid access to everyday Russian LGBT citizens and activists coping with mounting discrimination, as well as to one prominent anti-gay legislator, who together paint a sobering picture of the worsening reality for Russia’s queer citizens.

Anti-gay sentiment has spread rapidly as Vladimir Putin and the radically conservative Russian Orthodox Church include tightened their political grip, banning so-called “gay propaganda” and making nearly any public discussion of gay equality a crime. Violent attacks against Russian gays, or suspected gays, are often recorded and posted online with impunity. Lucas’s interviewees come from all walks of life and contain noted journalist Masha Gessen, who as a lesbian mother must weigh fleeing the country with her family after she is singled out as an unfit parent by legislator Vitaly Milonov (also interviewed). We hear from a gay male couple, who despite years of cohabitation still hide their association from neigh

Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay Propaganda

One of the more troubling news stories surrounding this year's Winter Olympics in Sochi centered on the status of gays and lesbians in Russia. Homosexuality was not tolerated during the Soviet era, but the post–Cold War years witnessed an even greater hostility toward gays, as political and religious factions sought to scapegoat the demographic through media attacks, legislation, and an environment that encouraged forceful assaults on LGBT Russians. This documentary presents a series of interviews with Russian men and women who openly identify their sexual orientation, despite rejection by their families, discrimination, and increased threats. Some downplay their lifestyle, while others—most notably, the organizers of an LGBT film festival—attempt to force a conversation with a wider population that views homosexuality as a Western perversion. Also appearing is a Russian parliamentarian who crafted the so-called “gay propaganda” legislation that created international furor. But the real surprise here is that Campaign of Hate is a mature and intelligent documentary from Michael Lucas, a filmmaker notorious for directing queer porno flic
campaign of hate russia and gay propaganda

As most of the nature moves towards gay equality, there's a handful of countries that seem to be moving the reverse direction. Of these countries, perhaps the only one among them that truly qualifies as a "world power" is Russia, a country that became even more known for the issue during the recent Sochi Olympics. As recently as last year, Russia passed significant legislation outlawing gay propaganda.

    What is lgbtq+ propaganda?

In Russia, it's just about any public discussion, protest, expression of identity festival, or to use the terminology most familiar to America's LGBT community, any true sense of organism "out."

With a goal of educating about the campaign of hate dominating Russia, writer/director Michael Lucas has crafted this informative and well constructed 78-minute highlight documentary that arrives on home video with QC Cinema, the LGBT distribution arm of indie distributor Breaking Glass Pictures. While the film does construct a point of noting that, at times, there's a bit more of a relaxed feeling amidst the bigger cities such as Moscow, Lucas doesn't hold back when it comes to the extremes to which the Russian government and its people have em
