April marks Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. In Ireland, approximately 170 people get diagnosed with testicular cancer every year. It is the most ordinary cancer for people with testes aged 15-44 according to the Irish Cancer Society. While it is the most common cancer for this group, the good news is it is highly treatable, especially when caught early.

What is testicular cancer?

Testicular cancer occurs when cancerous cells build in one or both testicles. These cells alter and grow, forming into a tumour or mass. These cells may then get into the blood stream and lymph system, causing tumours to expand in other parts of the body.

What to peek out for?

Testicular cancer is most often discovered by identifying a lump on either testicle. This lump does not have to be painful to be cancerous. However, this is not the only warning sign of testicular cancer. Other symptoms of testicular cancer include;

• heaviness in the scrotum (aka ball sack)
• an ache in the drop belly or groin
• sudden swelling in the scrotum
• general pain or discomfort in the testes/scrotum
• enlargement/tend

  My mother’s greatest desire was the marriage of my elder brother. “Ah, when I behold the face of Ananta’s wife, I shall find heaven on this earth!” I frequently heard Mother express in these words her strong Indian sentiment for family continuity.

  I was about eleven years old at the time of Ananta’s betrothal. Mother was in Calcutta, joyously supervising the wedding preparations. Father and I alone remained at our home in Bareilly in northern India, whence Father had been transferred after two years at Lahore.

  I had previously witnessed the splendor of nuptial rites for my two elder sisters, Roma and Uma; but for Ananta, as the eldest son, plans were truly elaborate. Mother was welcoming numerous relatives, daily arriving in Calcutta from distant homes. She lodged them comfortably in a large, newly acquired house at 50 Amherst Lane.   City centre health and wellness on the other hand is a small less abundant. Chain gyms aside, conclusion niche exercise classes in the municipality centre can be a workout in itself.

  Society could learn a lot from the practice of yoga.  Yoga philosophy emphasizes non-judgment, acceptance, and caring at its very core.  Take the recent comments by Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathie regarding his company’s support of the traditional family unit.   Though his initial comments were not inflammatory, his clarifications were.

  “Well, guilty as charged. We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives.”

  He didn’t stop there.  He called the generation that supports gay marriage “arrogant” for going against God.  Whew.

  These comments caused an immediate reaction on both sides of the aisle.  Boston mayor Thomas Menino even went as far as to urge Chick-fil-A not to open a restaurant in that metropolis, because Bostonians were also “guilty as charged, “ and “full of celebration for support of identical sex marriage and our work to expand liberty to all people.”  Menino went on to tell that there was no place for discrimination on Boston’s famed Freedom Mark, and no place for Chick-fil-A along that famed route.  Many people across the nation have called f
