The non-binary subtext of Wolfwalkers

The arc of said awakening in particular mirrors the struggles of wrestling with sexual and gender dysphoria for many queer teens growing up. Robyn experiences an initial overwhelming mess of confusion, shame and fear, exacerbated by the very first transformation happening within her own house, resulting in her being chased with intent to destroy by both town guards and her own father. Robyn’s outlines start to soften afterwards, making her appear even more out of place in Kilkenny but still just a touch too heavy to fully associate in the forests with Mebh and the wolves either, at least until the movie’s closing third when they fully soften into pencil sketches. Crucially, Wolfwalkers big centrepiece scene, in which Robyn and Mebh discover the pleasure of their wolfwalker forms together whilst AURORA’s triumphantly soulful β€‹β€œRunning with the Wolves” cries out over the soundtrack, also dramatizes the unbound freedom of a safe queer territory. Wolfwalkersmight be one of the best-animated movies of the 2020s. Sure this decade has barely begun, but this whimsical film is absolutely stunning.

I adore Cartoon Saloon’s movies. Like Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells – Wolfwalkers is a film whose foundation lies in Irish mythology, which doesn’t get enough attention in the media. The focus, in this production, is on wolfwalkers – people who turn into wolves when they hibernate and who can interact with canines. Kinda favor a werewolf but without the painful transformation, losing your humanity and lust for human flesh.

 

So, a cooler, better version of our modern-day werewolf.

Robyn Goodefellow and her father Bill moved to Ireland from England in 1650. Naturally, the pair aren’t quite welcomed by the Irish. Bill was hired to rid the surrounding woods of wolves by Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell.

Robyn, frustrated with all the rules of Kilkenny, escapes to the woods. While trying to prove herself as a hunter, Robyn meets Mebh, a rowdy red-haired little girl who heals her hunting falcon. And bites her.

This turns Robyn into a wolfwalker – and the two then must work together to find Mebh’s

before anyone starts thatΒ β€œthey’re step sisters!!!” with some borderline homophobic takes about anyone who sees themselves in mebh/robyn as sapphic youth, i implore you to read this interview.

the creators make no claim of coding them as sisters, nor do they acquire anything against those who see anything between the unintentional but welcome subtext of mebh/robyn’s friendship and overall relationship. if they really, truly intended moll and bill to complete up together by the end of the clip, i REALLY don’t deliberate they would’ve had something as basic as a flower being given to symbolise that. heterosexual relationships are beyond normalized in media at this indicate. if they were together, then surely a embrace would’ve followed, right?Β 

i seriously doubt that’s the note the creators wanted to leave off on, especially when just hours prior we witnessed the identical to bill giving a flower to his daughter.Β

i personally see it as the ties between wolfwalkers and humans being mended after being broken for so long. it’s definitely a caring gesture, just not one that’sΒ  romantic. it’s open to interpretation of course, but you’re grabbing at straws
