“But Why Does It Contain To Be Gay?” - An Ethnographic Analysis of the Slash Fanfiction Phenomenon

My research focused on the connection between male homoerotic fan literature (“slash fanfiction”) and female sexuality. I became interested in this concept/question when my mother asked why my organization of friends and I (and the overwhelming majority of the users of the website on which we interact with one another, Tumblr) “see lgbtq+ everywhere.” There is a running joke on this website that “Tumblr likes gays more than gays like gays.” Tumblr and the Archive Of Our Own (a multifandom fanfiction database known commonly as AO3) are heavily interconnected, and together produce a massive amount of (primarily male homoerotic) fan literature—fiction, often explicit erotica, homoeroticising male characters who are generally canonically portrayed as at least nominally heterosexual in their original medium. The vast majority of the users of both of these sites are female. Thus, women are a driving force behind a sizeable portion of the Internet’s written portrayal of male homosexuality. It is produced primarily by and for women. Why? What

straight woman gay fetishist fans of mcr are really weird too because they like. i don’t recognize how to articulate this but they only like homoeroticism thats in the flavor of “hahaha this guy does this lgbtq+ thing but Sure hes straight” like even when theres clear cases of like. lgbt people celebrating their gender/sexuality or making a political statement about homophobia or whatever they still try to pigeonhole it into ‘this person insists theyre a unbent man but they undertake funny things i adore like kiss men’ even when said people love. literally never even said they were straight and actually makes a signal to not label themself as such????? whats up with that

spoke in general terms even though i’m talking about mcr because this absolutely is a pattern i’ve seen in a lot of other contexts but if we’re gonna be specific for a second

like even if we’re not factoring in gender stuff they’ve talked about, gerard way has literally not stated they’re straight!!!

(maybe the exception of one time in an interview talking about gender stuff saying they were confused about gender stuff gro

Anonymous: Ok but you thinking Laurens was gay is only your interpretation as well? He was married to a woman and if you like to imagine him as gay for whatever reason you're free to but don't invalidate people who think he was straight as we DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. Hence, your opinion is just as valid as of those who think he was straight, if not less so due to actual historical evidence.

We certainly approach our interpretations of historical figures with our own biases, but I confirm you that I have a wonderful deal of historical support for my interpretation of Laurens as a same-sex attracted man.  I contain been researching Laurens for about three years now and would be joyful to discuss his sexuality with you.

Allow me to crack down my argument.

1) “He was married to a woman”

Yes, this is true.  But it seems to me that you’re using this one fact to convince me that he was unbent, and you don’t seem to be aware of any of the context behind that marriage.  John Laurens and Martha Manning come across to have been good friends and got along quite well - until they had sex.  After they had sex, Laurens largely avoided her and married her only because she was pr

yo the people who declare that eddie isn’t homosexual because he marries a woman are about the most naive folks out there. you have to be mad heterosexual to not understand the notion of being in the closet and doing everything you can to conceal your sexuality.

if you wanna debate about a character’s sexuality you’re going to have to do finer than bringing up their significant other whom they explicitly stated they didn’t plan on marrying and they aren’t in care for with! try again

SAY IT AGAIN LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.

Eddie himself stated he married her out of pressure and familiarity. There was no love involved. He did not find her suited to him, but merely offered a offer because she practically bullied him, and he knew it was what people expected. She is just as much of a mental and emotional manipulator as his mother was. He tragically mistook this familiarity and this settling as what life and love were supposed to be. And honestly? It happens plenty enough in real life, too. King’s books are out there, but they’re labelled as a psychological ho

Thinking about this further, just this morning I had been going over in my head how I generally select straight couples. Organism into romance is a somewhat uncommon thing for me so it's not something especially straightforward to notice, but a lot of the aesthetic images I reblog and songs I'm into are very explicitly about M/F relationships, and I complete not think they would appeal to me in the same way if they weren't.

In many ways I touch like my thinking is very rooted in cisheteronormativity. That means continuing to try and unlearn some things, and going forward with defiantly queer spins on others, prefer with being a male woman.

I've half-jokingly/half-seriously complained about how modern praxis has made it so in theory Calamity and Axel* should have less difficulty with the idea of monosexual biromanticism now being more of a thing, but it's engaging anyway to examine how love between a cishet male and cis female homosexual can (a) remain and (b) still be queer.

lol TERFs fucking haaaaate me

*have I mentioned you should read Nursed With Kerosene lately?
