Illegal Sex: Photos exploring Berlin’s Underground Cruising Scene
photo: Marc Martin
With his photo series “Cruising” French photographer Marc Martin reimagines a time before dating apps, a time when widespread toilets, were the only place to find sexual encounters for many lgbtq+ men. Behind closed doors, in front of shiny tiles and messy graffiti, these places were a meeting notice for those who could not exploit their own homes, who could not be open about their sexuality and desires. His operate is on present at Schwules Museum Berlin in the exhibition “Fenster zum Klo – Common Toilets & Secret Affairs”.

The photos, set in a vintage Berlin toilet, featuring Berlin models such as Pierre Emö, complete not shy away from explicit content. Men out of different social classes, pencil pusher or handyman, share a brief moment of intimacy, crammed in a small general bathroom. The scenario might be staged, yet its setting is original and the actions shown far from the lived reality of many gay men up to the 1990’s. Underground Universal Toilets at Hermannplatz, Kaiser-, or Mehringdamm were well-known locations for gay men, young or senior, that were for a

A perfect, gay Berlin weekend of culture
Saturday is all about culture. During the day, galleries and museums invite you to visit them, including Galerie Deschler. There, a tribute to LGBTQI+ representative Volker Spengler, the former Fassbinder player, is currently on exhibition. In the show, magnificently presented images, photographed by legendary Berghain bouncer, Sven Marquardt, are on display and curated by Nicholas Mockridge. The Urban Nation is currently exhibiting the six-decade retrospective of photographer Martha Coopers, with free admission. We also recommend the Schwules (Gay) Museum, which attracts not only the homosexual community, but also many straight people, with its captivating exhibitions. In addition to the Irène Mélix show, ‘Lonely Hearts’, there is an exhibition consecrated to HIV: ArcHIV goes on a search for traces of AIDS history, using the thematic AIDS exhibitions from ‘Infectious’(1992) to ‘Intimacy’ (2020). In October 2021, the first exhibition on inter* persons, ‘Mercury Rising’, will open. A spectacular space station with multimedia wall installations has been planned. Artists add Cult of Rae, Rebekka Swan, and Money Mitchell.

Cruisy gym in the center of Berlin. Lots of incredibly gorgeous guys work out here -- several professional models and stars, even. Fine facilities for working out. But the best place is the steam room -- in the year I was a member there, most of the guys in the steam room were looking for some j/o or . I had some unbelievable times with some Steamy guys.
