I spent 10 days on one of Europe's biggest 'all-gay' cruises for $3,000. Here's what it was like on the ship.

In November 2021, I booked my first-ever cruise: An "all-gay" Atlantis tour around the Mediterranean via Royal Carribean. It would place sail in August 2022.

I was a bit overwhelmed by the cost, since I spent $3,000 on a shared room. The price didn't even contain booze.

With over 4,000 passengers — the majority of them being queer men — this boarding on the Odyssey of the Seas was one of Europe's biggest gay cruises.

Within 48 hours of boarding, we had to obtain a negative COVID-19 test. I had an Italian breakfast while I nervously waited for my results.

When I boarded, I used the Royal Caribbean's messaging service on its app for $20 — I could contact fellow passengers if I knew their entire names.

I came prepared with my "business" cards, which are common on queer cruises. Many put their socials and room number on them to maintain track of who they meet.

The first thing that stands out on all-gay cruises is the passengers' cabin doors. On an ordinary cruise they'd stare like

Case study: Atlantis

Introduction

A cruise is an all-inclusive holiday: travel, accommodation, food, excursions, amusement. It would be good if any cruise would also be all-inclusive as to their passengers. Unfortunately, the representative patrons are - or used to be - older and more old-fashioned, so to unite such a ‘family’ for a week or two could be awkward for gays and lesbians.

Note: having said that, the times, they are a-changing. A number of cruise lines own discovered the LGBT travellers, trying to haul them in. They have even set up onboard events like "Friend of Dorothy" meetings - a legal title that would signify nothing to the straight passengers, so it is a safe name for "meet your male lover and lesbian fellow travellers".

Although my explore primarily focuses on mainstream companies aiming at the lgbtq+ consumer, I would like to spotlight two gay owned and operated companies here that possess set the usual in this field. Their marketing attempts might well be labeled LGBT, although also in this case, the B and T segments as such are difficult to extend - although they are obviously welcome aboard.
