Highlights

  • According to the General Social Survey (GSS) on Victimization, more than three-quarters (78%) of Canadians were very or somewhat satisfied with their personal safety from crime in 2019.
  • One in five (19%) Canadians or their households were impacted by one of the eight crimes measured by the GSS in 2019. There were 8.3 million incidents of sexual assault, robbery, physical assault, fracture and enter, theft of motor vehicles (or parts), theft of household or personal property, or vandalism.
  • Almost seven in ten (69%) self-reported incidents were non-violent in innateness. Theft of personal property, the most common crime type, accounted for more than one-third (37%) of all criminal incidents.

    Three men accused of drugging and robbing men at Manhattan gay bars and nightclubs were create guilty Monday, more than two years after the deaths of two of their victims.

    Jayqwan Hamilton, Robert Demaio and Jacob Barroso were found remorseful on all charges following a three-week trial in downtown Manhattan. Prosecutors had accused the three men of active together to prey on, drug and rob five men between March 2021 and June 2022.

    Two men — 25-year-old Julio Ramirez and 33-year-old John Umberger — died as part of the long-running robbery scheme. The trio had been accused of preying on people out enjoying Manhattan's darkness life. The crimes didn’t come into broad public view until May 2022.

    "We are heart broken because nothing is going to convey John back but we are so grateful to God that hopefully no one else will be hurt by these men," Umberger's mother, Linda Clary, told NBC Fresh York.

    Clary said relief washed over her after the jury foreman said the word remorseful, convicting the trio on multiple counts including murder, robbery and conspiracy.

    "We are overwhelmed with gratitude and joy," said Clary. "Hopefully he’s killing it up in heaven, and that's who John was."

    The dislike crime enhancement in the federal sentencing guidelines, U.S.S.G. § 3A1.1(a), increases a defendant’s offense level by three if they “intentionally selected any victim . . . because of the actual or perceived” protected characteristic “of any person.” Though the enhancement is in relevant part titled “Hate Crime Motivation,” its text does not refer hate, and courts differ on how to interpret the guideline and similar statutory language. Recently, in United States v. Patterson, the Ninth Circuit held that section 3A1.1(a) applies only when the defendant was motivated by hatred or animus. However, rather than requiring hate motivation, a better reading of the enhancement would oblige only that the protected trait be a aware reason supporting the defendant’s selection of the victim. This reading would comprise cases like Patterson, where the victim’s protected inherent was a deliberate proxy for another trait.

    Ashley grew up downtown. As a steep school dropout, he said he had been operational toward earning some sort of employment certificate before he was sent to Rikers. He was living with his elderly grandmother in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and taking nurture of her.

    “I had a lot of s--- going on before,” Ashley said. “I was trying to get my life together.”

    On May 14, 2022, Ashley went to The Ritz — the same block where Ramirez was last seen a month before — looking for a hookup, he said. He said he had been to the bar two or three times before. 

    Prosecutors said Ashley left the bar and went to the apartment of the man whose phone and wallet Ashley would later steal. Ashley said he does not remember going back to the man’s apartment but does recall that he had not met the man before. He described the dude as being in his 20s and Latino.

    Police obtained security footage of Ashley using the victim’s phone to pay for Taco Bell that equal morning via Apple Give, according to prosecutors. Ashley said he does recall getting Taco Bell but suggested the victim could have bought him food.

    Camden Town man who preyed on gay men jailed for burglary

    MET POLICE

    A guy who preyed on same-sex attracted men in a string of burglaries in London has been jailed, as police urge other workable victims to come forward.

    Reda Zahri, 22, approached his victims in the lane and often engaged in sexual activity before stealing their belongings, the Met Police said.

    In one of the three burglaries, he stole more than £25,000 from one man.

    Zahri was jailed for 11 years and six months after admitting three counts of burglary and false imprisonment.

    He also admitted attempting to commit robbery relating to three different men.

    Detectives tracked Zahri down after he stole items from a man he had met in Camden.

    The victim had Zahri's Instragram operate and showed this to officers.

    Zahri, of Haverstock Road, Camden Town, initially refused to address any questions after he was arrested on 12 May 2022.

    He also lied about his age and claimed he was 17 years old, police said.

    Det Con Nigel Pacquette said: "All three of Zahri's victims were gay men, making clear that he was preying on members of the gay community."
