Capturing the experiences of nearly 34,000 LGBTQ youth ages 13 to 24 across the United States, with 45% of respondents being LGBTQ youth of color and 48% existence transgender or nonbinary, our fourth annual national survey is one of the most diverse surveys of LGBTQ youth ever conducted.
These data provide critical insights into some of the unique suicide risk factors faced by LGBTQ youth, top barriers to mental health care, and the negative impacts of COVID-19 and relentless anti-transgender legislation. This research also highlights several ways in which we can all sustain the LGBTQ young people in our lives—and support prevent suicide.
Young adults have been slap harder than any other age group by the psychological, political, economic, and social repercussions of the last two years. Within this demographic, young people who identify as Queer have been even more drastically impacted. A novel Trevor Project survey on LGBTQ+ youth mental health found that 66 percent of LGBTQ+ young adults are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and 53 percent are suffering from depression. For transgender and nonbinary youth, LGBTQ+ depression rates are even higher.
These troubling statistics illuminate the struggles LGBTQ+ young adults encounter and the pressing necessitate for social change to support these demographics. This includes those with intersectional identities that encompass more than one marginalized culture or group—such as Asian American/Pacific Islander, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, or multiracial Gay youth. LGBTQ+ young adults need tools for resilience and well-being more than ever before.
