June 26, 1939 – July 3, 1998

Police arrested 20-year-old Muskegon native John Leon Allen in January 1960 in a crackdown on homosexual activity at the University of Michigan.  He was permitted to graduate, doing so with honors.  He went on to win his library science degree at the University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in 1974.  Allen later served as longtime columnist for the Muskegon Chronicle, coming out to his readers in the early 1990s.

United Way Launches The Inclusion Exchange to Promote Gay Affirming Spaces on the Lakeshore

Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana Counties, MI (May, 2025) — United Way of the Lakeshore is proud to announce the launch of The Inclusion Exchange, a four-part community education series designed to help individuals, businesses, and service providers build more inclusive and affirming spaces for Gay individuals across Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana Counties.

This free series is made workable through generous support from the Love is Devotion LGBTQ+ Fund at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, and is offered in collaboration with the Grand Rapids LGBTQ+ Healthcare Consortium.

United Way of the Lakeshore fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. Through The Inclusion Exchange, Together Way is mobilizing the caring power of group to ensure everyone—regardless of identity—can live with dignity, safety, and belonging.
