Burger King’s ‘Pride Whopper’ Leaves a Bad Taste In People’s Mouths

It’s the first week of June, and brands are out here already doing the most for Pride month. Burger King Austria recently unveiled a ‘Pride whopper,’ which is just like a regular whopper with two top buns or two bottom buns, and the reactions have been a mix of confused, shocked, and absolutely horrified.

“Burger King Austria made a Pride burger that’s either two tops or two bottoms… what in direct hell?” Netflix’s Jarett Wieselman wrote on Twitter.

The fast diet chain unveiled the meaty disaster on Instagram earlier this month, announcing that the burger will be available until June 20. The post received over 2,000 comments, with one Instagram user exclaiming, “holy shit, this ain’t it bro.”

Many other comments accused the identity of rainbow washing, when companies exhibit support of the LGBTQ+ community in their ads, without actually contributing to the betterment of the community. Some Instagram users asked whether Burger King was planning on donating any of the profits from selling the superior and bottom whoppers, to which Burger King Austria responded by saying, “We are official par

Burger King is currently creature grilled in Austria over its Pride Whopper. The Whopper, marketed across its social media channels, comes in two variations: two superior buns and with two bottom buns. The upload, which was translated into English, said the Whoppers come in two matching buns to represent identical love and equal rights, adding that it stands for the equal rights of all identities and sexual orientations. According to the QSR brand''s post, it aimed to put a smile on people's faces and remind them to treat each other respectfully and peacefully.

However, Burger King Austria's marketing gimmick was not foolproof as it garnered mixed sentiments from netizens. Some accused the identity of rainbow-washing and pride-washing, with several questioning if there was any actionable impact on the Gay community. One user asked: "Are you also doing anything specifically for the LGBTIQ community, or is this just an advertising hook for you?", while another commented: "One morning into Pride month and [I'm] already exhausted". A few even questioned the marketing concept of the Pride Whoppe

People Are Furious Over Burger King's Gay Pride Whopper

In support of gay event month, a San Francisco Burger King has begun selling Whoppers wrapped in rainbow-colored paper inscribed with the words, "We are all the same inside."

The marketing campaign, which is limited to just one restaurant, has set off a firestorm of backlash among customers, with hundreds of people vowing to boycott the fast diet chain.

"You can take that pride BS and shove it BK, me and my family are going somewhere else!" Dennis Chacon Neira wrote on the company's Facebook page Tuesday. "and i will convince my friends NOT to eat at your restaurants, hope you go belly up!"

"I Affection a Whopper, but I'll never eat there again," another Facebook user wrote.

"I'm done supporting Burger king," added a third.

A wide-ranging majority of the 350+ Facebook comments regarding the burger, which will only be available for a matter of days, are negative.

People have also been sounding off on Twitter.

The fast food chain is also being accused by some of pandering to the LGBT community.

Local blog SFist.com gave this title to a post on the campaign: "Burger King Panders To Gay Rapid Food Fa

One of the plenary sessions featured a prominent business man who was astonishing and brilliant in his business advice and acumen! However, during his speech he hit three (of the many) critical mistakes in mis-communicating with the LGBT community. When he said them I cringed a little on his behalf. He was so passionate, so genuine and so authentic with his care for the collective, but he wasn’t armed with the right way to effectively communicate.

All three things he said possess been the subject of previous blog posts or material in my fresh book. What was so fascinating is that I had many people approach up to me and say ‘hey, can you believe he said that?’ or ‘I’ve read that on your blog before.’ My response to all of the conversations I had were ‘I’ve addressed this topic on my blog and/or book, I’m so happy you are reading my materials. Ultimately he seems like a genuine man so we should give him the benefit that he just doesn’t know the right language to use.’ Everyone I said this to, had a collective, ‘yeah, that makes se lgbtq whopper

Burger King ad prompts apology after 'Pride Whopper' campaign featuring burgers with 'top' and 'bottom' buns sparks backlash

Burger King Austria is trying to work its way out of a whopper of a PR gaffe.

The fast-food chain's advertising agency issued an apology on Sunday for a much-ridiculed, tone-deaf marketing campaign announcing the "Pride Whopper," a burger served with "two matching buns."

The ad, which was first featured on Burger King Austria's Instagram page on June 1, includes a burger with two bun tops and another with two bottoms, a seemingly misinformed nod to sex within the LGBTQ+ community.

Jung von Matt Donau, the German agency that worked on the campaign for Burger King Austria, wrote in a LinkedIn post that it "didn't review well enough with community members on different interpretations of the Pride Whopper."

"The intended message of the Pride Whopper was to spread equal love and equal rights," the post reads." Our strongest concern is if we offended members of the LGBTQ Community with this campaign. If this is the case, we truly apologize.
