Iker Casillas has said a tweet announcing he was gay, which was published from his personal Twitter account, was the consequence of a hack.
The former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper posted the update to his 10 million followers on Sunday afternoon.
'Hacked account,' Casillas posted. 'Luckily everything in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.'
Around 30 minutes earlier, the original post - which read 'I expect you respect me, I'm gay' - had been deleted from the account.
Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol had initially responded to Casillas' tweet.
Translated, it read: "It's time to declare them about us".
But Puyol also subsequently removed his post following Casillas' deletion.
Puyol later tweeted an apology, which read: "I was mistaken. Sorry for a clumsy joke without any bad intentions but absolutely out of place. I understand that it could have hurt feelings. All my respect and help for the LGBTQ+ community."

Iker Casillas on Sunday caught everyone's attention on Twitter, where he asked everyone to respect him because of his homosexuality. The tweet was deleted soon and since then, the former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper took to the social media platform to reveal that his account was 'hacked'. His initial post on Sunday interpret, "I hope you respect me: I'm gay."
The post has since been deleted and it also received a reply from Carles Puyol, who quipped, "It's time to reveal our story, Iker".
After deleting the initial tweet, the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner explained, "Hacked account. Luckily everything is in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community."

In a tweet published on Sunday afternoon, the ex-Spain goalkeeper said: "I hope you respect me: I'm gay." Casillas was married to sports journalist Sara Carbonero for five years before their separation in March 2021, having had two children, both boys.
The 41-year-old received a wave of back upon his shock announcement, including from Barcelona legend and his former Spain teammate, Carles Puyol. Casillas, who retired in 2020 after suffering a cardiac arrest during training with final club Porto, is remembered for being one of football's most thriving goalkeepers.
Casillas and his former wife famously kissed on air during a post-match interview after Spain won the World Cup and have helped each other through serious health scares during their five-year-marriage.
