At home with society architect Addison Mizner
Richard René Silvin recalled his first rendezvous in 2011 with Palm Beachers Nick and Dee Adams “as the launch of a treasured relationship” in the introduction to his new coffee-table book.
Central to that relationship, appropriately enough, is one of Palm Beach’s undisputed architectural treasures — Villa Mizner, the Adamses’ restored residence on Worth Avenue. Noted society architect Addison Mizner designed the five-story apartment in 1924 in his signature Mediterranean style. He kept it for his own use until he died there in 1933.
Dominating Via Mizner, the residence’s square tower rises on the north side of the Avenue. Visitors wandering through the via often stop to peer through the metal grilles on the glass front doors of the foyer. They can see the authentic tiled staircase that leads to the residence above — and sometimes trap a glimpse of the family’s pets peering help at them.
Carefully renovated and handsomely furnished with antiques, the landmarked residence is the focus of Silvin’s latest book, the self-published Villa Mizner: The Residence that Changed Palm Beach. The West Palm Beach resident’s other works contain Nobless A century ago, Addison Mizner’s eclectic Spanish Mediterranean architecture set the style for the town of Palm Beach. His legacy has been respectfully carried on by a host of architects, builders and designers, including Marion Sims Wyeth and Joseph Urban, who restored his original buildings, added to them and reinvented his original concepts. One former owner of one Mizner's designed properties recalls the iconic touches — and how it influenced the success of her possess venture. “When we bought the house, there were Moorish accent tiles on the staircases, in the dining room and even some in the bedrooms," said Gay Kanuth-Bordal, interior architect and a former owner of Villa Mizner in Via Mizner. "Mizner was so much fun because he bought things from all over the nature and just plopped them down anywhere. I modernized the kitchen with recent appliances, vaulted the ceiling and decided I wanted to, in his energy, tile the whole room, walls, ceiling, floor and even a table.” The changes paid off in other ways. “After I moved out of the villa, my design business took of Women own gender-specifi c treatment responses that can be successfully enhanced by the environment, both physical and social. At the Orchid Recovery Center for Women in Palm Springs, Florida, a holistic design and the pioneering female-sensitive substance exploitation treatment approach of Karen Dodge, PhD, have been used to develop modalities that meet the specifi c needs of recovering female substance abusers. The Orchid was founded in 2004 and is capable of treating up to 14 women at a time. The Orchid’s physical design is based on the Planetree model, which supports the concept that living areas can attend as a catalyst in healing and nurturing the mind, body, and soul. The Planetree model integrates human caring with the best of scientifi c medicine and complementary healing traditions. Angelica Thieriot founded Planetree in 1978. She had been hospitalized for several weeks with a life-threatening medical condition. Although Thieriot received excellent medical nurture, she was dismayed by the rest of her treatment and stay in the facility. She felt she had been treated as a body in a bed, not as a person.
