His Legacy Lives On: SKINS by XXXTentacion

In June of 2018 a rumor circulated that rapper XXXTentacion, aka Jahseh Onfroy, who had been killed by a robber at the age of 20, was still alive. When an painter this influential, versatile, and successful dies an untimely death (think of Tupac Shakur and Elvis Presley) it’s perhaps not surprising that such conspiracy theories might arise. But XXXTentacion’s legacy was different, as he accumulated a very powerful fan anchor after releasing only two albums and being mainstream for barely a year before his death.

On Dec.10, 2018, his first posthumous album, SKINS, was released. Although the album is only 10 tracks and 19 minutes lengthy, he managed to combine the sounds of punk, rock, emo, and hip hop all into one. These versatile sounds led to a new shape of rap for younger youth, called “SoundCloud rap,” which has since inspired rappers like Lil pump, Smokepurpp, Ski Mask the Slump God, Fat Nick, and many more. This form of rap is controversial within the hip hop community, but no one can argue that these rappers have a special bond with their fan anchor. SKINS sold 129,000 units in its first week and reached number one on the Billboard

XXXTentacion is dead. I hate to admit that possibility has crossed my mind before. A year or so ago, I listened to him saunter the No Jumper cast through a story about a gay cell mate he claimed he thrash half to death for looking at him. I heard the rapper utter he smeared the kid’s blood on his encounter. I heard the host’s subtle, uncomfortable guffaw, a laugh of either disbelief or pure terror. I stopped patronizing both because I couldn’t tell the difference. I followed the story of the lady the rapper was accused of attacking, threatening, terrorizing, and kidnapping. I watched him spark the fascination and admiration of listeners, musicians, and websites in spite of — no, let’s be honest, now, finally — because of the idea that the cruel, uncompromising figure he played on the harsher records in his fleeting catalogue lined up with violence he encouraged and visited on others in real life. “Real identify real,” crime and cruelty be damned.

Not long before he was killed, XXXTentacion foresaw imminent death as a real possibility and mused about his legacy.

"Worst thing comes to worse, I f—king die a tragic death or some s—t and I'm not able to see out my dreams, I at least want to recognize that the kids perceived my message and were able to make something of themselves and use it to turn it into something positive, and to at least have a good life," the 20-year-old rapper said in a recent Instagram livestream. "If I'm going to pass away or ever be a sacrifice I want to make sure that my life made at least 5 million kids joyful, or they found some sort of answers or resolve in my life."

On Monday, XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Wayne Onfroy, was shot by an assailant in a red mask as he was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, Fla., and pronounced lifeless at a nearby hospital at 5:30 p.m. local time. A vigil was planned for Tuesday evening outside the motorcycle shop.

2nd man arrested for murder of rapper XXXTentacion

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida -- A second person has been arrested in the June shooting that killed emerging rap star XXXTentacion, authorities in Florida announced Wednesday.

Michael Boatwright currently faces first-degree murder charges, the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Investigators said the 22-year-old suspect was initially arrested last week on an unrelated drug attack. Jail records didn't list an attorney for him.

The 20-year-old rising star XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was pronounced dead on June 18 at a Fort Lauderdale-area hospital. He was shot outside a Deerfield Beach motorcycle dealership.

Also charged in the killing is 22-year-old Dedrick Williams. His lawyer has said he will plead not guilty.

Authorities say robbery was the motive in the killing.

Detectives still want to converse with a third dude, 22-year-old Robert Allen, who is described as a "person of interest" in the case and may know something about the killing. Allen is also wanted in Broward County on a felony warrant for violation of probation for possession of the drug flakka and carrying a

Twenty-year-old rapper XXXTentacion was recently shot dead by two masked men as he left a motorcycle dealership in South Florida.
